Abstract
We describe an adolescent boy presenting with insidious complaints of pain and swelling of its ankle, subsequently being diagnosed with a Brodie’s abscess in the distal tibia. Our goal is to review literature on prevalence, etiology and treatment possibilities for this kind of subacute osteomyelitis which presents as a bone abscess. The usual presentation is pain and swelling without fever and an insidious onset with an elevation of C-reactive protein and other inflammatory serum markers in only in a minority of patients. We aim to raise awareness, since this subtle presentation often comes with a significant diagnostic delay.
